Top 5: 3G data card dongles

Sunday, 22 January 2012
Posted by ADMIN

There are several data card options in the market. However, most of them come with a locked SIM.

In the Indian telecommunications market, which is highly competitive, locking yourself to one operator’s network is not a wise decision. But unfortunately, the 3G data card segment in India is dominated by SIM locked devices.
These devices have two major disadvantages. First, none of the 3G operators have a nationwide network and so you will be left high and dry if you travel to a place where your operator doesn’t have a 3G network.

Also, with a locked SIM card, you cannot change the operator if you are not satisfied with the service. And buying a whole new connection is generally a costly affair. Moreover, operators keep changing tariff plans, so it is better to have the ability to change operators.
Thus, having an open network data card has a lot of advantages over locked SIM dongles. Here we have discussed the top five 3G data card options that are not locked to a network (also called open market data cards,) and are easily available at online as well as physical retail stores. Apart, from that shortlisted dongles support minimum 32 GB micro SD card.
Huawei EC303C dongle (Rs 1,750)The E303C dongle, which was launched in December last year, offers consumers the liberty to choose their favourite operator as per the best data plan available in the market. Customers can utilise the same SIM card used in a handset to connect and access data.
The data card offers 7.2 Mbps download speed and also works on Edge and GPRS networks. Design wise, the dongle has nothing much to offer, other than very good quality. Also, the company claims that the dongle can connect you to a network in 15 seconds even when you are using it for the first time as there is no dial process to go through.
It supports 32 GB micro SD cards as well. Besides, Huawei offers a co-branded game CD, a Rs 300 gift voucher, and Hungama coupons together with this card.

Salora Zapper-3G data card (Rs 1,900)Salora Zapper-3G data card was launched last September. It supports download speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 5.76 Mbps. The 3G data card offers features like voice call through GUI, phonebook and SMS support, and social networking as well.

The Salora Zapper 3G data card comes with auto-install software. The data card is mainly available through online stores and has a memory card slot that supports up to 32 GB.

Lava 730G (Rs 1,700)
This is one of the most affordable options with support for 7.2 Mbps download speed. What’s more, it supports voice calling, phonebook and SMS capability, and users can also check their prepaid balance in the same way as on their mobile (e.g. *123# for Airtel).
This one also supports a 32 GB microSD card. The data card looks sleek and is available in black and white colours.

Beetel MF190 (Rs 1,800)Beetel MF190 is actually a ZTE device – one of the closest rivals of Huawei. The device supports up to 7.2 Mbps data download and has a microSD slot with support for up to 32 GB. It doesn’t seem to support voice calling and, at Rs 1,800, is more expensive than other offerings.

Alcatel X300 (Rs 3,000)
This is the costliest in the list and is so because it supports data speeds of up to 14.4 Mbps. But since very few operators offer that kind of speed, the utility of this data card is limited.
This one too has a microSD slot with support for a 32 GB card, and it also supports phonebook, SMS, and prepaid balance checking. However, high cost is the reason for its being down here in the list.
This is by no means a definitive list. There are other products in the market that are very competitively priced, and still other that are either more expensive or are offered at slower speeds (3.6 Mbps), or have limited or no support for SD cards (16 GB or less).

By moving large apps to the SD card, you can improve your Android smartphone’s performance.

Usually, Google Android OS based smartphones in India have 2 GB to 16 GB/32 GB on-board storage

After installing about 20-30 apps, the phone usually start toslow down. To fix this, the best option is to move the installed applications to the SD card storage.
A simple Android application — App 2 SD Free lets the user move applications installed on the phone memory to mobile storage, i.e. the SD card or external storage.

For this guide, we used a Nexus S running Android 4.0 ICS and the app we’ve used works on Android 2.2 or higher.
Step 1
Download, Install App 2 SD and open it.
Step 2
Tap the app you wish to move to the SD card or USBstorage. Note that apps showing the ‘x’ symbol on their icon can’t be moved.
Step 3
The app will take you to the settings interface and you should scroll to find a “Move to SD Storage” or “Move to USB Storage” button.
Repeat the same process for all the applications to be moved.
Once the app has been moved to SD card storage, the internal memory of the phone will have free space for new apps, or you could leave it empty to make your device faste

Introduction

Facebook latest and greatest feature has been producing mixed feeling from it’s users, but the strain seems to be more towards positivity. Although I am not a big fan of the “Timeline” feature, here is a short guide on how to do it.
Step 1: Visit the timeline about pageGo to http://www.facebook.com/about/timeline and click the green button saying “Get Timeline” at the bottom right hand corner of your screen.
HowTo: Get Facebook Timeline
Step 2: Wait 7 days for your timeline page to be public
After clicking “Get Timeline”, you will be the only person who can see your timeline page for 7 days.
According to Facebook, this is to allow users to decide whether they want to keep the Timeline feature.

A Portable GPS system can be used in many ways, and is a great tool to own. For example, you can use a GPS tracking device in your vehicle to help you find your way while you are driving to a new location. You can also use it on a boat when you are fishing, if you are taking a long bike ride, or going on a hike. Using a GPS system, you will never get lost again.
You can also use a portable GPS system as a tracking device. For example, if you have an expensive motorcycle, you can put a GPS tracking device on it so you will be able to track it if it gets stolen. Many business owners use tracking devices on their company trucks so they can keep up with their employees and know where they are driving.
Set up your Portable GPS System
Portable GPS systems are wireless, so you can use them for many different things, and most are easily portable from one vehicle to another, without having to move a lot of equipment.
When you first open your new portable GPS system, plug it into an electrical outlet and allow it to fully charge before you put it in your vehicle. In most cases, a fully charged GPS will last you approximately eight hours. When you place it in your car, you should understand that it cannot track as easily through metal. It can easily track through glass, however, and most people place the device on their windshield. It will also track through other materials, such as plastic, any type of fabric, foam, or even wood.
The portable GPS system can be plugged into your cigarette lighter when used in your vehicle. When you first power it on, you will be asked to select your language, and then select your home address. The screen will automatically prompt you for your next response. Some portable GPS systems allow you to select the shortest route to a certain destination, or you can tell the system that you want to avoid certain highways or roads.
Select your destination using the touch screen on your portable GPS unit – select the state, and then enter the address of your destination. Most systems will “find” your address after you enter in a few letters automatically. Once you enter the street name, the unit will display a list of streets that you can select from. Select the city by typing it into the unit, or you can select the city from a list displayed on the screen.
If you do not know the street address, enter a restaurant, gas station, shopping mall or other destination into the unit and it will list the establishments in that area. You can then select that establishment and the address will appear on your screen. Select the Navigate or Go button when you are ready to start your trip, or you are ready to track. A map will be displayed on your screen, as well as written directions, and a computerized voice will instruct you as you travel to your destination.

Portable GPS Tracking Options
All portable GPS tracking devices will have different options, but most devices require that you navigate to their website to activate your account. The website address and instructions to do this will be in the manual that you receive with your device. Once you navigate to this website, you will see many different tracking options that you can utilize. You can also find information about the object that you are tracking, such as its exact location and speed of travel. Look in your user manual for many different tracking options.

Erase a Re-writable CD/DVD in Windows XP without any Software

Guess what, you can burn a CD/DVD on Windows XP without using any software. For information how to copy files/folders to a CD/DVD on Windows XP without using any software, see this article. Similar, you can erase a re-writable CD as well.
Windows XP comes with a builtin CD-copy feature, which let users do some quick CD/DVD burning tasks without using any other software.

The information on this article will show you how to erase a CD-RW/DVD-RW without using any other software on Windows XP. You can do either a quick erase or a full erase. Once the CD/DVD is erased (or "formated"), it is considered "blank" and you can write new files/folders to it.

Requirements: You need to enable the CD-R feature on Windows XP. If you haven't done so, see this article.
Note: Besure to backup the data from your CD/DVD before proceed.

Insert a ReWritable CD/DVD disc into the CD/DVD drive.
From Desktop, double-click on "My Computer".
Double-click on the CD-Rom drive.
On the window that displays the contents of the CD, click on the menu "Erase this CD-RW" on the left panel.

On the window "CD Writing Wizard", click "Next".

The "CD Writing Wizard" starts to erase the CD:

Once the erasing is complete, the wizard will disappear and the CD-Rom window shows no files on the CD. You're done!
Burn a CD/DVD on Windows 7 or Vista without using software

CD/DVD burning capability has been added to Windows Operating System since the release of Windows XP. However, the steps to burn CD/DVD on Windows Vista and Windows 7 are a bit different (and somewhat simpler) comparing to Windows XP.
For details on how to burn CD/DVD on Windows XP, click here
You can use this built-in feature to create a data CD/DVD or an audio CD. The steps below will guide you through the procedures. Although the steps below are based on Windows 7, they are very much similar to Windows Vista.

If you're using a Re-Writable CD (CD-RW) or DVD (DVD-RW, DVD+RW), make sure the disc is blank (or "formatted"). You might need to erase (or "format") it before using. For information how to erase a rewritable CD/DVD on Windows Vista or Windows 7 without using a third-party software, see this article.

Insert a blank recordable/rewritable CD (CD-R) or DVD (DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW) disc into the CD burner drive.
With a new blank disc, Windows might pop up a prompt asking you which format you want to use (as shown on the image below).
As explained on the popup, the option "Like a USB Flash Drive" is more convenient if you want to use the disc as an external storage, which you can add or delete (rewritable disc) files on the fly; however, once the disc is formatted with this option, it can only be read on computers with Windows XP or later. On the other hand, the option "With a CD/DVD Player" is the traditional format of CD/DVD disc and is compatible with a wider range of Windows versions as well as other devices, but requires to burn the disc (or erase the entire disc) all at once.

To keep it simple, we will follow the steps to create traditional CD/DVD, so select "With a CD/DVD Player". Don't forget to change the "Disc title" to something descriptive for your disc, then click "Next".

Navigate to the folders or files which you want to burn to the disc, then select (highlight) the folders/files and click "Burn" (located above the file browsing panels)
A new window is now created similar to the following image, showing the selected files and folders added to the queue to burn to disc. Click "Burn to disc".

On the next popup "Burn to Disc", verify the disc title and select the maximum burning speed, then click "Next".

If you have selected audio files (i.e. MP3), you will be asked to burn the disc as data or audio as shown in the following image. For details on the differences between data and audio discs, please prefer to this article.

The burning wizard will start writing data to the disc and will close and eject the CD/DVD when finish.
